Răzvan Suma is one of the most important cello soloists in Romania. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the Music University in Bucharest, Romania, and also studied at Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the Artist Diploma Program. He attended masterclasses with great cellists like Arto Noras, Frans Helmerson, Herre Jan Stegenga, Miklos Pereny, Marin Cazacu and Radu Aldulescu.
Răzvan was born in 1977 in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and has been an award winner cellist ever since picking the instrument up at the age of 6, receiving the first prize in a competition at the age of 7 (1984). He won important international competitions as Markneukirchen Competition - Germany, G. B. Viotti Competition - Italy, Chişinau Competition – Republic of Moldavia and Villa de Llanes – Spain.
He performed with many orchestras throughout the World as Bern Symphony Orchestra or Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, ERT Grece, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Kazakh State Symphony Orchestra, Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, playing next to very important musicians, such as Maxim Vengerov, Alexander Sitkovetski, Richard Galliano, Borromeo Quartet, Justus Frantz, Josef Lendvay, Misha Katz, Jin Wang, Wen Sin Yang or Marin Cazacu.
Starting 2010, Răzvan is the Cello Soloist in Residence of the Romanian Radio Orchestras and Cello Professor at Bucharest Music University. He performed concerts and recitals in such countries as France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Argentina, USA, Macao, Vietnam, China, Maroc and the Republic of Moldovia. He was invited at the MDR Music Festival in Dresden, Germany, Murten Classics Festival in Switzerland, SONORO Festival in Romania or Klaipeda Cello Festival – Lithuania. Razvan was invited to play in great concert halls as Berlin Philharmonic Hall – Germany, Bamberg Symphoniker Hall, Poland – Wroclaw Muziky Forum
Since 2011, Răzvan is touring every year in Romania with “Vă place…?” (“Do you like…?”) project. The first edition of the tour – “Do you like Bach?” - was conceived around J. S. Bach - The Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello: Răzvan played 19 concerts with all suites in the same concert. The second tour was a J. Brahms tribute – “Do you like Brahms?” - with the two cello and piano sonatas and included 13 concerts, “Do you like TANGO?” – “Do you like SCHU-bert-mann?” with pianist Horia Mihail, “Do you like BEETHOVEN?” with pianist Daniel Goiti. Razvan rebranded all his personal Tours under one generic name – PlaCello, creating PlaCello Ensemble next to most important cellists from Romania.
Together with Spanish Vasc pianist Josu Okiñena, Răzvan is building a great career as a duo, playing concerts in some of the most important halls in the world, like Teatro Colon - Buenos Aires, Kursaal - San Sebastian, Auditorio National - Madrid, Romanian Radio Hall - Bucharest, Romanian Atheneum - Bucharest. In 2007 they recorded the two J. Brahms sonatas for piano and cello and in 2013 they presented the “Do you like Brahms?” 13 concerts tour in Romania with the same repertoire.
Răzvan is the creator and Artistic Director of the first Cello Festival in Romania – CellEAST Festival.
